About RUCSPY

New Zealand RUC sales data, open to everyone. A free platform for exploring, understanding and reusing national sales figures from NZTA.

Making NZ RUC Sales Data Useful

How much RUC is sold in New Zealand each month? How have sales changed over time, and what do the regional and vehicle figures show? The data is public. Finding an answer should be straightforward too.

RUCSPY brings NZTA's national RUC sales figures into one free platform. Explore monthly and annual reports, compare regions and vehicle categories, or download the numbers for your own analysis. No account, subscription or payment is required.

We built RUCSPY for the journalist checking a figure, the researcher investigating a trend, the transport operator comparing periods, and anyone who wants a clearer picture of New Zealand's road user charges sales. You should not need specialist software or technical knowledge to start asking questions of public data.

A Platform by RUC on Rails

RUCSPY is owned and operated by RUC on Rails Limited. We believe making road user charges easier to understand matters alongside making them easier to manage. RUCSPY is our contribution to that understanding: practical tools, openly available figures and context that helps people use them responsibly.

Looking to purchase road user charges? RUC Pass lets you buy RUC online or in the app.

Independent of NZTA. RUCSPY is not part of, operated by, or endorsed by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi. The sales data comes from NZTA; the website and its presentation are provided by RUC on Rails Limited.

About the Data

Our sales data comes from NZTA's publicly available Road User Charges - Monthly Summary. This is the national RUC sales summary, covering recorded sales across New Zealand, including purchases made directly through NZTA as well as through RUC agents. It is not limited to sales through RUC on Rails or any individual agent.

The dataset groups RUC sales by month, owner location, vehicle and licence categories. It contains summary figures rather than records identifying individual vehicles or owners. Refunds and reversals can change the figures, and fully refunded or reversed transactions are excluded by NZTA.

What the Figures Mean

RUC Sales
The recorded value of RUC sales in New Zealand dollars, including NZTA's revisions for refunds and reversals.
Kilometres Sold
The distance covered by licences sold. RUC is bought in advance, so this is not the distance driven during that month.
Licences Sold
The number of RUC licences sold. A vehicle can have more than one licence, so this is not a count of vehicles.

Coverage and Comparisons

Monthly Updates

RUCSPY automatically picks up new months and revisions from NZTA. Live charts and downloads fetch the available source data when you use them. Published reports refresh after a scheduled daily check detects new data, with a dedicated report page for each new month.

NZTA's monthly sales data typically runs 30 to 60 days behind the current date. This is a publication delay, so the latest available figures may cover an earlier month even when RUCSPY is up to date. Each report shows the source update date so you can see which publication its figures use.

NZTA publishes monthly data and may revise earlier figures. The current year includes only the months available. Published reports show their source date and retain older figures when those months leave NZTA's live dataset.

Regional figures use the registered owner's address, not where the vehicle travelled. Changes in RUC rates, eligibility and when licences are bought can also affect comparisons.

Our Commitment to Open Data

Public data has more value when people can put it to work. Publishing a file is only the beginning. People need to be able to find it, understand what it measures, check where it came from and take the figures into their own work.

Our commitment is to keep those opportunities open. Whether you are checking one month of RUC sales or building years of research, access to RUCSPY's public data tools should not depend on your budget, employer or technical background.

  • Free access to the figures. Keep the public reports, explorer and downloads available without a paywall or account.
  • Data you can take with you. Provide CSV and JSON downloads so you can analyse, share and build on the figures under the source licence.
  • A clear path back to NZTA. Identify the original dataset, reporting period and source update date so readers can check the evidence.
  • Context alongside the numbers. Explain what RUC sales measure, acknowledge limitations and reflect published revisions. Clear definitions matter as much as accessible charts.

We support the principles of the Open Definition: data that people can access, use and share with clear licensing and proper attribution. This is an independent commitment by RUC on Rails, not a certification or affiliation.

Downloads and Reuse

Download Sales Data lets you choose a period, filters and a CSV or JSON file.
